Winter Festivity Held by English Honors Program
The English Honors Program at College of the Holy Cross recently provided an opportunity for seniors to present their thesis projects at the 2024 Academic Conference and the Winter Celebration. The events, which took place at the end of April and on November 20th, 2022 respectively, were attended by families, friends, and members of the English Department, as well as students from various disciplines in the Honors Program who demonstrated academic excellence at the College.
Nine students presented their projects, including Ben Lepper '25 with "The Boy on the Sixth Floor - A Memoir." The presentations offered a platform for students to showcase their research and literary analysis or creative work, which had been supported by faculty supervision throughout the academic year.
The English Honors Program is a selective program that requires applicants to meet certain GPA criteria, submit a proposal or statement of purpose, and gain faculty approval to enter the program. Students in the program are required to complete advanced coursework in English and conduct independent research under faculty mentorship. The culmination of the program is a written thesis and a formal presentation or defense, demonstrating mastery of the field.
At the 2024 Academic Conference, students had the opportunity to see the work of their classmates and gain inspiration from their projects. Ben Lepper stated that he was inspired by the other students' projects, while Professor Susan Sweeney, who established the English Honors Program in 1998, expressed pride in the students' presentations.
In addition to the presentations, the 2024 Academic Conference provided opportunities for students to network and engage in discussions about their research. The event also included an English major shirt giveaway for attendees.
Following the presentations at the Winter Celebration, there was a Question and Answers session, where students and attendees could ask questions about the projects and engage in further discussion. The Winter Celebration was led by Professor Susan Sweeney.
Students are now working to complete the first few chapters of their thesis before the Winter Break, with presentations or defenses scheduled at the end of the academic year. The English Honors Program continues to provide students with a unique opportunity to explore a project related to English and develop their research and analytical skills.
