University of Lagos Calls Off Strike and Plans to Resume Academic Operations

Lagos State University (LASU) has announced that the ongoing industrial action by its staff will come to an end, following a resolution reached between the university's Senate and the state government. The resolution, which acknowledges the efforts made towards addressing staff demands, was reached on Thursday, August 7.

The strike, which began on July 31, 2025, involved employees across various levels of the university, and had resulted in the suspension of academic and social activities. However, the resolution adopted by the LASU Senate has paved the way for the resumption of activities, effective from Monday, August 13, 2025.

Students are now instructed to return to their hostels across the Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe campuses from Wednesday, August 13, 2025. The previously suspended 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations are now scheduled to begin on Monday, August 18, 2025.

Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, made an emotional appeal via the university's official X account, expressing that the "deafening" silence on campus weighed heavily on her heart. Prof. Olatunji-Bello also acknowledged staff welfare improvements, such as full year-end bonuses, promotion opportunities, timely salary, and allowance payments, as evidence that "our voices have been heard."

It's important to note that this resolution does not provide any new information about the resumption of activities, return of students, or examination schedules, as these details were previously mentioned. Additionally, the unions have not yet returned to work as of the date of this article.

The strike at LASU is being led by the Joint Action Committee, which includes ASUU, SSANU, NASU, and NAAT. This incident is an independent event and not related to any other ongoing strikes mentioned elsewhere.
