Introducing the "Today is Gay" Google Calendar Plugin

The "Today is Gay" Google Calendar plugin is a free and innovative tool designed to educate users about significant historical moments, events, and anniversaries that have shaped the LGBTQIA+ community. Developed by The Ginger Beers, an LGBTQIA+ group at Wieden+Kennedy London, this plugin aims to commemorate key dates in LGBTQIA+ history and keep users informed about ongoing struggles, culture, and achievements.

This plugin adds curated entries related to notable LGBTQIA+ milestones, pride months, famous activist birthdays, and historical achievements. These calendar entries serve as reminders of the diverse history and ongoing journey of the LGBTQIA+ community, often emphasizing awareness and celebration of diversity.

The plugin includes lesser-known facts, such as the invention of the high-five by Glenn Burke, the first major league baseball player to come out as gay. Other notable individuals featured in the plugin include historian Lillian Faderman and Lithuania's first openly gay politician, Rokas Źilinskas.

The plugin also highlights significant events such as the legalization of same-sex marriage in Canada and the resignation of Queen Elizabeth's bodyguard, Commander Michael Trestrail, after being in a relationship with a male prostitute. Reports suggest that the Queen stopped Prime Minister Thatcher from making "gays in the Palace" a public issue.

The Today is Gay project team emphasizes the importance of being loud, proud, and urgently visible in the fight for queer history. Wil Koslowski, comms planner at Wieden+Kennedy London, discusses the fragility of progress and the erasure of queer history from corporate calendars. Winona Wee, co-lead of The Ginger Beers and senior creative at Wieden+Kennedy London, expresses that the project was a labor of love.

Each member of the team took charge of a different month, with their choices reflecting the diversity in the team. The plugin is compatible with the work calendars of over 500,000 companies and millions of people worldwide. The Today is Gay website provides more information, allows for the download of the plugin, and features an Instagram account for updates.

In a joyful way, the Today is Gay project turns loss into gain, ensuring that queer stories remain visible. By integrating important historical moments into a familiar daily organizer platform, the plugin serves as a reminder of the rich history and ongoing struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community, while also providing a tool for education and celebration.
