Unfilled training spots remain at number 1,1400
In the state of Hesse, there are currently 11,400 unfilled trainee positions, according to the Hessian Employment Agency. Despite a significant increase in applications for trainee positions compared to previous years, many positions remain unfilled.
The Hessian Employment Agency has attributed this "mismatch" between the offered positions and the qualifications or career aspirations of the applicants as the primary reason for the unfilled positions. This trend is not unique to Hesse, as evidenced by the 229,000 unfilled training positions nationwide in 2025.
To address this issue, businesses can leverage various resources. Utilising official employment agency channels, such as the Federal Employment Agency’s job board and affiliated sites like "Make it in Germany," can help employers reach a broader and more qualified applicant pool, including skilled workers from abroad.
Holm Pfeiffer, the owner of a carpentry workshop in Aßlar, has found success in this approach. Despite the workshop not being included in the Hessian Employment Agency's report on unfilled trainee positions in Hesse, Pfeiffer has managed to find suitable applicants for three trainee positions.
Pfeiffer emphasises the importance of direct contact with young people at job fairs, presenting the company on social media, and showcasing the apprenticeship as key strategies for attracting good trainees. Early advertising of trainee positions is also crucial, according to Pfeiffer.
The uncertain economic situation is causing businesses to be cautious with trainee positions, further disadvantaging the 12,000 applicants still seeking trainee positions in Hesse. However, by implementing these strategies, businesses can improve their chances of finding suitable candidates and filling their trainee positions.
The Hessian Employment Agency did not mention any plans to address this issue specifically. Nonetheless, understanding the root cause of the unfilled positions—a lack of suitable candidates—is the first step towards finding a solution. By utilising available resources and adopting effective recruitment strategies, businesses in Hesse can navigate this challenge and find the right trainees for their operations.
Education and self-development, such as gaining necessary skills, are crucial for securing trainee positions, as many unfilled positions may be due to a mismatch between applicants' qualifications and career aspirations. Leveraging resources like job boards and direct outreach can help businesses reach and attract a broader and more qualified applicant pool, thus facilitating learning opportunities for both parties.
