UN Establishes People of African Descent Stakeholder Group for Global Inclusion
The United Nations has taken a significant step towards promoting racial equality and sustainable development. The People of African Descent Stakeholder Group has been officially established by the Major Groups and Other Stakeholders Coordination Mechanism (MGOS CM). This historic milestone is a result of extensive efforts by Geledés - Black Women's Institute, led by black women, who have been advocating for the inclusion of People of African Descent in multilateral processes.
Geledés' international advisor, Letícia Leobet, played a crucial role in pushing for the formal establishment of this stakeholder group at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) and the Summit of the Future. The new group aims to address historical exclusions and ensure the voices of People of African Descent are reflected in global discussions. This is a notable expansion of the Major Groups and Other Stakeholders (MGoS) structure, which initially recognised nine groups and has since grown to include diverse stakeholders.
The People of African Descent Stakeholder Group will benefit communities of People of African Descent across all diasporas worldwide. Interested groups can participate by contacting the group's secretariat at [email protected]. While the search results do not provide specific information about the organisations allied with Geledés during the lobbying process, the institute's relentless efforts have culminated in this significant achievement.
The official establishment of the People of African Descent Stakeholder Group marks a turning point in ensuring the inclusion and representation of People of African Descent in global decision-making processes. Geledés - Black Women's Institute's advocacy has paved the way for a more inclusive and equitable future, promoting racial equality and sustainable development on a global scale.
