UCLA Secures $1 Million Grant from Jerry Moss, Co-Founder of A&M Records, for Arts and Music Scholarships
Jerry Moss, the philanthropist and co-founder of A&M Records, has made a significant contribution to the Moss Scholars program at UCLA. His latest donation of $1 million will substantially support the program's mission to provide prestigious scholarships and enriching experiences to outstanding students.
The Moss Scholars program, named in honour of its benefactor, aims to attract high-achieving students, particularly in the fields of art and music. It offers full scholarships to students at UCLA's School of the Arts and Architecture and the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. This donation continues Moss's legacy of philanthropy towards UCLA, fostering educational excellence and empowering future leaders.
The program has already benefited 30 undergraduate and graduate students, and it can be especially valuable for international students due to their additional travel and related costs. The Moss Scholars program is designed to attract diverse creative voices and practices to UCLA.
The UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture and the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music's graduate arts program is ranked No. 1 among U.S. public universities. One of the recipients of the Moss Scholars program is Refik Anadol, a media artist from Turkey who earned his master of fine arts degree from UCLA in 2014. Anadol credits the Moss Scholars program for helping him realise his dreams as a media artist.
Anadol's recent project, "WDCH Dreams," was a multimedia installation displayed on the exterior of Walt Disney Concert Hall for one week in the fall of 2018. The new gift and the matching funds will create an endowment that ensures the Moss Scholars program can continue in perpetuity.
The Moss Scholars program aims to help attract a diverse cohort of local and international students and give them the chance to learn at UCLA and from each other. Moss believes that art and music are global in nature and transcend boundaries.
This donation is part of the Centennial Campaign for UCLA, scheduled to conclude in December 2019 during UCLA’s 100th anniversary year. The donation triggered a matching gift of $500,000 from the UCLA Chancellor's Centennial Scholars Match program.
