Temporary suspension of visas for foreign students in the USA - U.S. Halts All Student Visas for International Applicants

US Temporarily Suspends Scheduling of New Student Visa Interviews

The State Department, under the leadership of Secretary Marco Rubio, has instructed U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide to temporarily halt scheduling new appointments for student (F, M) and exchange visitor (J) visa interviews. The suspension is in preparation for an expansion of required social media screening and vetting, according to Politico and other major outlets.

Existing visa interviews will reportedly still be honored. This pause on new appointments will continue until further guidance is issued, likely in the coming days. The move aims to expand the review of visa applicants' social media activities.

The administration is contemplating requiring all foreign students applying to study in the U.S. to undergo mandatory social media checks. This expanded vetting is expected to bring increased scrutiny and privacy concerns. While previous social media screening efforts were primarily targeted at returning students, especially those who may have participated in protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza, the new policy would apply to all student visa applicants.

The impact of these policies could lead to significant processing delays and financial strain for U.S. universities, which rely heavily on foreign student enrollment. Additionally, the administration has taken steps to target specific groups of students, such as threatening to revoke visas for up to 50,000 Chinese students in California and penalizing universities for non-compliance with new requirements.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce declined to comment on the new reports, saying they use "every tool at our disposal" to vet "everyone who wants to come to the U.S." Legal challenges to some visa revocations and university penalties are currently ongoing, and these policies are part of a broader effort to tighten immigration controls and vetting processes for international students in the U.S.

  1. The expansion of social media screening and vetting for foreign students seeking to study in the U.S., part of broader immigration policies, has sparked discussion within the education-and-self-development sector, politics, and general news communities.
  2. The new employment policy regarding social media checks for student visa applicants has raised concerns about potential privacy issues and processing delays within the community, which could impact universities' financial resources and enrollment statistics.
