Trump concludes UK official visit post-encounter with Starmer
Trump's State Visit to the UK: A Mixed Bag of Progress and Controversy
US President Donald Trump's second state visit to the United Kingdom was a whirlwind of pageantry, negotiations, and some unexpected incidents.
Trump expressed his gratitude for the 'pageantry and splendour' of the visit, and called King Charles III and Queen Camilla 'two fantastic people,' thanking them for their hospitality. The Trumps' final day in Britain included a visit to Windsor Castle, a helicopter ride to Chequers, a ceremonial honour guard, a parachute demonstration, and a tour of Winston Churchill's archive.
However, the visit did not yield significant progress on recognizing a Palestinian state. Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed that the situation in Gaza is 'a humanitarian catastrophe.' The British government has grown increasingly critical of Israel's conduct in Gaza and the suffering of Palestinian civilians.
Trump and Starmer discussed a range of issues, including wars in Ukraine and Gaza, US tariff rates on steel imported from Britain, and immigration policy. Trump urged Britain to take a harder line on immigration and insisted he made clear to Starmer that too many illegal entries can destroy countries.
Despite the disagreements, Trump and Starmer signed a historic agreement on science and technology. The agreement, initiated by US companies led by Microsoft, includes investments of $42 billion in the UK for AI in healthcare, quantum computing, and nuclear projects. American companies are also announcing £31 billion (NZ$71 billion) in investment in the UK's AI sector, including £90 billion (NZ$205 billion) from investment firm Blackstone in the next decade.
However, the visit was not without controversy. Four people were arrested over a stunt that saw an image of Trump and Jeffrey Epstein projected on a tower at Windsor Castle. Trump largely avoided discussing the Epstein issue during his visit.
Trump's relationship with Putin was also a topic of discussion. Trump has expressed frustration with Putin but has not made good on threats to impose new sanctions on Russia.
In a subtle nod to current geopolitical tensions, the King, in his state banquet speech, offered Trump a gentle nudge, noting 'as tyranny once again threatens Europe, we and our allies stand together in support of Ukraine, to deter aggression and secure peace.'
In the end, the royal family and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's charm offensive seemed effective, despite a lack of progress on key matters. The visit served as a reminder of the complex and multifaceted relationship between the US and the UK.
