Schoolchildren in Eißendorf and Marmstorf Begin New Academic Year

In Hamburg, the 2022-2023 school year commenced with a bang, as over 20,000 first-graders, including 146 from the School In der Alten Forst, began their educational journey. This significant increase in first-graders compared to previous years could be attributed to various factors such as population growth, family relocations, policy changes, or improved school facilities.

At the School In der Alten Forst, principal Andreas Wiedemann and his dedicated team organised a memorable pirate-themed welcome party to help the new first-graders adjust to their new surroundings. The school's sports hall was bustling with parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends, as well as teaching staff and kindergarten teachers, all eager to support the young pirates on their first day.

The event kicked off with the first-graders receiving their very own pirate hats, setting the stage for a day filled with interactive activities, stage performances, and even the use of smoke and mirrors. The third-grade students acted as sea robbers, guiding the newcomers through pirate life, fostering a sense of camaraderie and togetherness.

The Marmstorf Primary School, located at Ernst-Bergeest-Weg, welcomed a total of 155 children on its grounds, while the Eißendorfer school welcomed 100 first-graders and 56 kindergarten children. The school community, which values respectful togetherness, joy in learning, and music, was proudly showcased during the event.

In a heartfelt speech, Christopher Luhrs, the new principal, expressed his enthusiasm about accompanying the children through their primary school years. This was his first public event as a principal, and he made a lasting impression on the school community with his warm and welcoming demeanour.

Fourth-graders performed a pirate play for the first-graders, adding to the day's excitement. The event concluded with the 92 kindergarten children being welcomed the following day, marking the start of another school year filled with learning, growth, and adventure.

While the exact reasons for the increased number of first-graders in Hamburg remain unclear, it is evident that the city's schools are prepared to provide a nurturing and engaging environment for all students. The School In der Alten Forst's successful pirate-themed welcome party is a testament to this commitment.
