Mireille Twayigira: Overcoming Adversity to Pursue a Career in Medical Education
Mireille Twayigira, a licensed medical education professional, has an inspiring story of resilience and determination. Born in Rwanda, Twayigira was raised in poverty and faced starvation and malnourishment before the age of six. Tragedy struck when her father was killed during the war between Tutsis and Hutu members of the government in Rwanda, leaving her and her family to flee to a refugee camp in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Twayigira and her grandfather moved again to Malawi for better medical education and living conditions. Upon arriving, she enrolled in school immediately and made several new friends. Despite the hardships she faced, Twayigira finished among the top 6 students in the national final exam in Malawi in 2009.
With the help of the Jesuits at her school, a Catholic radio station, and the Malawian parliament, Twayigira was able to get her paperwork in order to study in China. The Chinese embassy offered a full-ride scholarship to study medical education in China for the top students, and Twayigira was one of the selected students. She graduated and is now working as a medical intern in Malawi.
Twayigira's journey is not without loss. Her younger sister died due to lack of access to medicine and proper nourishment during the war, and her grandmother passed away before they reached a refugee camp in Angola. Her grandfather passed away shortly after she finished school in 2007.
Twayigira hopes that her story will inspire others to help provide medical education and safe places for refugees like herself. She believes that educating a girl is educating the whole family and the whole country. Twayigira's dedication to her medical education and her desire to give back to her community is evident in her work as a medical intern and her advocacy for medical education for refugees.
In 2017, Twayigira attended a conference in Vatican City, the Voices of Faith conference, which was established in response to Pope Francis' call to "broaden the space within the Church for a more incisive feminine presence." Twayigira spoke at the March 8 Voices of Faith women's gathering in the Vatican, marking International Women's Day.
Twayigira's story is a testament to the power of medical education and determination in overcoming adversity. She is a shining example of the potential that lies within every individual, regardless of their circumstances. Her work as a medical doctor and her advocacy for medical education for refugees will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals.
