On 25 August 2025, Professor Angela Ballantyne will deliver her Inaugural Professorial Lecture at the University of Otago, Wellington. The lecture, titled "Navigating Ethical Dilemmas: The Role of Bioethics in Modern Medicine," will take place at the Nordmeyer Theatre, 23a Mein Street, Newtown, and will also be available online.
The lecture aims to shed light on the potential for bioethics to clarify and navigate ethical dilemmas in healthcare and biomedical research. Professor Ballantyne will discuss how bioethics provides crucial frameworks and guidance to address complex moral challenges, balancing competing values, protecting patient rights, and informing policy decisions amidst rapidly evolving medical technologies and societal expectations.
The event is free and open to all, both in person and online. Registration can be done in person at the venue or via Zoom. The lecture is part of a series of presentations happening nationwide, with a list of all events available under the Ethics and Science topic.
Professor Ballantyne's lecture comes at a time when human systems are challenged by a legacy of injustice, declining social trust, and unequal distributions of power. She believes that bioethics is an essential discipline for making thoughtful, equitable, and ethically sound decisions in modern medicine, striving to help make things, if not right, then at least better.
The lecture resources will be available after the event, making it an excellent opportunity for those who cannot attend to still engage with Professor Ballantyne's insightful discussion on bioethics.
Engaging in this lecture offers the chance to delve deeper into the intersection of science and education-and-self-development, as Professor Ballantyne explores the role bioethics plays in shaping decisions in modern medicine. Furthermore, for those unable to attend, the resources will be available post-event, serving as a valuable tool for self-directed learning about bioethics.
