Student Crossing Guards from Solingen Shine at Competition

In a display of dedication and skill, 21 student crossing guards from Solingen participated in the annual student crossing guard competition organized by the city's traffic safety council. The event, held on June 27, aimed to select representatives for Solingen at the state competition in Oberhausen.

The competition was a comprehensive test of the students' abilities, encompassing role-playing scenarios, a reaction test, and a written test. The role-playing scenarios evaluated how the student crossing guards handle conflict situations, asserting themselves while remaining calm and friendly. The reaction test required participants to press a sensor that lit up, determined by a random generator, testing their quick reflexes and ability to respond under pressure.

Emma Grastat, a student from Schwertstraße High School, emerged as the winner of the competition. She has been active as a student traffic warden since 2022 and also participates in the traffic cadets. Emma emphasized that she does it for the school community and to support the younger ones to come to school safely. Sarah Fetahovic from the same school came in 5th place, and Adrian Lefers from Schwertstraße High School took 4th place. Anton von Gregory from the Humboldt Gymnasium came in 2nd place, and Tim Jorma from the Friedrich-Albert-Lange School placed 3rd.

All participants from 6th to 21st place were awarded 6th place and received a reflective backpack, candy, and a McDonald's gift card. Daniela Berghaus, the traffic safety coordinator, stated that everyone is a winner in the competition. Marcel, a 16-year-old student at the Alexander-Coppel Comprehensive School, found the reaction test to be the most challenging due to the presence of many people and the unpredictable sensors.

A written test was held at the seven participating schools, with the top three boys and girls from each school qualifying for the 'finals'. The top five winners of the Student Crossing Guard Competition will compete in the state student traffic warden competition in June. Ulrich Schmidt, chairman of the traffic safety council, explained that the role-playing scenarios evaluate how the student crossing guards handle conflict situations.

In conclusion, the student crossing guard competition was a resounding success, showcasing the dedication and skill of the participants. The competition not only tested their ability to handle difficult situations but also highlighted their commitment to ensuring the safety of their school community. The top five winners are now gearing up for the state competition, aiming to bring glory to Solingen.
