Proposal for a Worker Radiation Safety Directive Requested by Commission in Response to Associated Risks

The long-awaited Strait of Messina Bridge project has officially entered the implementation phase, marking a significant milestone in the development of southern Italy. With a projected completion date between 2032 and 2033, the bridge promises to revolutionize connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and create thousands of jobs.

This ambitious project fits into a broader programme of infrastructure relaunch, led by the Ministry of Transport, with investments of 70 billion euros between Sicily and Calabria by 2032. The Bridge project, in particular, is expected to contribute a staggering 23.1 billion euros to the national GDP, create 36,700 stable jobs, and generate 10.3 billion euros in tax revenues for the State.

The Interministerial Committee for Economic Programming and Sustainable Development (Cipess) has given the green light to the definitive project, which is coordinated by the highest institutional body for economic programming and infrastructure investments. The bridge, if built, will be an engineering symbol of global significance, boasting a single span over 3 kilometers long and over 60 meters wide, making it the world’s longest suspension bridge.

The first construction sites for the bridge are set to open between September and October this year. The bridge will accommodate 6 lanes of road traffic and two railway tracks, at an altitude of almost 400 meters. Once completed, it is expected to reduce crossing times for motor vehicles by up to an hour and for trains by up to 2 hours. The bridge will also be open to traffic of trains and cars 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

However, the project is not without controversy. Oppositions argue that it represents a colossal waste of billions of euros, a gift to private entities, and an act of arrogance and disregard for legality, transparency, and the needs of Sicily and Calabria. Key concerns include the seismic risks due to earthquakes in the Strait of Messina area, environmental impacts such as effects on bird migration routes, and fears regarding infiltration by mafia organizations like Cosa Nostra and 'Ndrangheta into construction and contracts.

Despite these challenges, the project has received definitive design approval and a €13.5 billion budget has been secured, including an Addendum contract worth €10.6 billion signed between the general contractor Eurolink (led by Webuild) and the concessionary company Stretto di Messina. The bridge will also include roads, railways, three railway stations, and a business center, fundamentally transforming connectivity in the region.

In a recent statement, Pietro Salini, CEO of Webuild, commented that the approval of the project marks the beginning of a new era for Italy. The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, considers the project a strategic one for the development of the entire nation, while Matteo Salvini, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, has made it his flagship.

The Strait of Messina Bridge project, if successful, will not only transform the landscape of southern Italy but also serve as a testament to the country's resolve to overcome adversity and drive forward with ambitious infrastructure projects.
