Principal cherished in Toronto will continue at school following protests by students aimed at preventing transfer

Rosedale Heights School of the Arts is set to begin the 2025-2026 school year under the continued leadership of Principal Barrie Sketchley, following a decision by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). This decision comes after a series of principal and vice-principal promotions and transfers within the board [1].

The announcement was made by TDSB Supt. Jennifer Chan in a letter to the school community. The decision to keep Sketchley at Rosedale Heights was based on direction from a Supervisor appointed by the Minister of Education [2].

The decision was met with relief and gratitude from the school community, who have long appreciated Sketchley's dedication and leadership. Over the past 33 years, Sketchley has played a significant role in shaping Rosedale Heights into one of Toronto's most inclusive and creative high schools [3].

The students of Rosedale Heights had initially protested against Sketchley's proposed transfer to Harbord Collegiate Institute in June. Their protest was a testament to Sketchley's deep connection with the school and its community [1].

Katrina Matheson, chair of the advisory council, stated that Sketchley's return ensures continuity, stability, and thoughtful leadership at Rosedale Heights School of the Arts [4]. In a letter co-authored by Sawyer Bogdan and Megan King, Matheson emphasized that the team will guide the school through a year filled with learning, inspiration, and celebration [4].

The letter from Matheson also highlighted that the decision regarding Sketchley's return is a "win-win" for everyone involved. It stated that Sketchley's remarkable dedication and leadership have shaped the spirit and success of Rosedale Heights School of the Arts for over 30 years [5].

Opponents of Sketchley's move wrote a letter stating that his deep connection to students, families, and staff has shaped the identity of the school. They argued that the policy for parent participation in principal transfers was not followed [6]. However, the letter from Matheson did not provide any further details on this matter.

Barrie Sketchley will retire at Rosedale Heights School of the Arts in June 2026, marking the end of an era for the school. The school community looks forward to celebrating Sketchley's contributions and wishing him a well-deserved retirement.
