Preparing for Tomorrow: Ensuring Job Security for the Next Generation Workforce

In a world where technology is constantly evolving, a new study offers insights into how workers and companies can adapt to meet the challenges ahead. Based on responses from approximately 4,700 workers and in-depth interviews with companies and institutions, the study provides a window into the preparations being made in the workplace to meet the future world of work.

The study highlights the need for a shift in mindset, viewing the acquisition of skills as a means of future-proofing for both businesses and employment prospects. Companies are being urged to prioritize hiring candidates with digital and analytical skills, as well as soft skills that enhance adaptability, such as a growth mindset and willingness to learn.

However, the study does not specify the nature of the technological changes that are causing concern, nor does it identify the industries or sectors that are most affected. It is challenging for companies to make decisions about skills development in an uncertain future.

The study reveals a lack of systematic evaluation of the potential gaps between workers' current skills and those they will need in the future. Companies and workers need to adopt a more flexible approach, making plans to reskill but setting a path that can be adapted to changing circumstances.

In addition to companies, public institutions can play a crucial role in supporting skills development. They can facilitate accessible lifelong learning programs and certifications aligned with emerging technologies like AI, cybersecurity, and advanced analytics. They also help by providing labor market data and forecasting tools that assist both employers and workers in anticipating skills in demand.

Individual workers also have a critical role to play. They should cultivate a continuous learning mindset and proactively acquire new skills relevant to evolving technologies. Embracing digital literacy, problem-solving, and adaptability prepares them to transition into new roles or industries impacted by automation and AI.

Effective strategies for future-proofing the workforce involve coordinated efforts by companies, public institutions, and individual workers centered on skills development, adaptability, and strategic planning. Companies should prioritize agile approaches to workforce management, continuously upskilling employees through personalized training platforms, mentorship, and microlearning to bridge skill gaps.

In summary, future-proofing the workforce requires:

  • Companies: Agile hiring, continuous upskilling, strategic planning, and employee well-being focus.
  • Public institutions: Support lifelong learning, provide labor market insights.
  • Individuals: Embrace continuous learning, adaptability, and skill diversification.

These approaches combined enable a workforce capable of thriving amid ongoing technological transformation. The study, conducted in association with Boston Consulting Group, focuses on future-proofing the workforce and offers valuable guidance for businesses, workers, and public institutions as they navigate the challenges of the future.

Despite the challenges, the study also reveals a positive attitude among workers. Some 62% of employees consider themselves primarily responsible for acquiring new skills, but only 59% expect their employer to develop the training opportunities. Public institutions can help by establishing individual learning accounts, enabling workers to access training as and when they need it, continuously throughout their careers. Workers see the main obstacles to acquiring new skills as the lack of time and the cost of training.

The study also examines the role of public institutions in building new workforce skills. As the future of work continues to evolve, it is clear that coordinated efforts between companies, public institutions, and individual workers will be essential to ensure a workforce that is ready for whatever challenges the future may bring.

  1. The study emphasizes the importance of workers and companies adopting a continuous learning mindset for personal growth, education-and-self-development, and career-development, by embracing digital literacy and acquiring new skills in response to technological changes.
  2. Public institutions can aid in future-proofing the workforce by implementing lifelong learning programs, facilitating accessible certifications in emerging technologies, and providing labor market data to support skill development, thereby enabling workers to adapt more efficiently.
