Police and Kids Team Up in 'Blitz for Kids' to Promote Road Safety

Police in East Hesse recently conducted a nationwide action called 'Blitz for Kids' in front of the Fliedetalschule in Flieden. The event, held on Thursday (21.08.), saw 32 fourth-graders supporting officers and interacting with drivers. Despite 13 speeding violations, the action was deemed a success by Police Chief Inspector Harald Schlenk.

The initiative involved students handing out roses to compliant drivers and lemons to those breaking traffic rules. Surprisingly, hardly any lemons were given out all day, indicating that most drivers were attentive and followed traffic laws. Those who received a 'yellow card' from the students apologized, showing remorse for their actions.

The police chief emphasized the importance of adults setting a good example for children. He noted that youngsters perceive road traffic differently and cannot accurately estimate speeds, making it crucial for adults to stick to speed limits. During the action, not only speeding drivers were waved out of traffic; some were distracted by their phones, others were not wearing seat belts, and a motorcyclist drove past without a helmet. Despite the few violations, many road users were surprised but smiled when fourth-graders approached their cars with a rose and a 'thank you'.

The 'Blitz for Kids' action in Flieden was a successful reminder for drivers to follow traffic rules, especially with children present on the roads. Police in East Hesse will continue to be present at schools in the region as the new school year begins, ensuring road safety remains a priority.
