Nuremberg's former shopping center reopens: Wöhrl and Ikea to breathe new life into the center

The historic Kaufhof building in Nuremberg's Königstraße has been given a new lease of life, reopening its doors this Thursday after a long-term, sustainable realignment for urban development.

The reopening ceremony will be attended by Nuremberg's Mayor Marcus Koenig, Economic Affairs Commissioner Andrea Heilmaier, and representatives from IKEA, Woerl, Nuremberg Technical University, and "Beets & Roots." The event marks a significant milestone in the city's efforts to revitalise the area.

The city of Nuremberg acquired the property last year with the aim of transforming it into a future-oriented location, combining cultural, commercial, and scientific concepts. Since then, temporary uses have filled the building with life, less than a year after the city took ownership.

Concerts and pop-up exhibitions have been held in the building, underscoring its potential for cultural purposes. One of the cultural projects implemented in the building is the "Galeria Kaufhof," a temporary art and design space. The "UTN Science Lounge" of Nuremberg Technical University is now located on the former department store floor, adding an educational and scientific dimension to the building.

The shopping centre in the former Kaufhof building will be reopened in a festive ceremony this Thursday. An IKEA pop-up store will open on October 2, while the "Woerl Outlet World" (WOW) has already established its presence in the premises.

The temporary uses and permanent integration of the Kaufhof area into urban development are expected to attract a diverse crowd. Over 20,000 guests visited the building in a single weekend in April 2025, demonstrating the building's appeal to the public.

The city of Nuremberg is exploring permanent integration of the Kaufhof area into urban development, ensuring the building's continued vibrancy and contribution to the city's cultural and commercial landscape. The reopening of the former Kaufhof building is a testament to Nuremberg's commitment to sustainable urban development and its dedication to creating dynamic spaces for its citizens and visitors.
