Merz Unveils €35B Space Defense Plan Amidst Controversy

Germany's Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has announced a significant investment in outer space defence. The €35 billion plan, to be implemented by 2030, comes amidst a heated debate in the Bundestag and recent appointments in the space and transport sectors.

Earlier this year, Dorothee Bär, a CSU member, was appointed as Germany's first Minister for Space. She currently holds the post of Federal Minister for Research, Technology, and Space. Meanwhile, Evelyn Palla made history as Deutsche Bahn's first female CEO, despite opposition from the railway trade union EVG.

The Bundestag witnessed a fiery debate recently, with the AfD leader making controversial remarks. The SPD, in coalition with Merz's Union party, appeared disengaged during the discussion. The opposition accused the government of dismantling the welfare state with its proposed space defence strategy.

Merz, who visited Thuringia recently, is preparing for Germany's 35th national unity anniversary. His previous lack of visits to eastern states had led to feelings of being 'second class citizens' among eastern Germans. The Berlin marathon, attracting nearly 80,000 participants from 160 nations, served as a reminder of Germany's global appeal.

Pro-life and pro-choice demonstrations took place in Cologne, with both sides drawing roughly equal numbers of protesters.

The government's €35 billion investment in outer space defence, while controversial, signals a new era in Germany's space exploration. The appointment of Dorothee Bär and Evelyn Palla to key ministerial and CEO positions reflects a commitment to diversity and innovation. As Germany prepares to celebrate its national unity anniversary, the Chancellor's outreach to eastern states aims to address regional disparities.
