Malaysian Capital Markets enhance Simplified ESG Disclosure Manual, incorporating a Greenhouse Gas Emission Calculator for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

Capital Markets Malaysia (CMM), a body funded by the Capital Markets Development Fund, has announced the launch of the SEDG Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Calculator for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. The tool, developed in collaboration with the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC), aims to help SMEs measure and report their scope 1 and scope 2 emissions in a simplified and user-friendly manner.

Methodology

The calculator follows internationally recognized standards, including the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines. It uses pre-filled emission factors based on the IPCC's 6th Assessment Report (AR6) for common fuel types used in Malaysia, such as diesel, petrol, LPG, natural gas, and more. Emission factors for electricity consumption are sourced locally from Malaysia's Energy Commission data. The methodology ensures consistency, credibility, and alignment with widely accepted international GHG accounting standards.

Usage

Designed to simplify the complex process of emissions measurement and reporting, the calculator is accessible to SMEs, including first-time users. It helps SMEs not only report emissions but also identify key emission sources within their operations, facilitating informed decisions towards emissions reductions and climate action. The tool is available free of charge and in three languages: English, Bahasa Melayu, and Simplified Mandarin, catering to diverse SME users.

Updates

Launched in October 2023, the calculator has seen widespread acceptance, particularly among Malaysian and multinational companies with large supply chains. CMM continues to conduct nationwide workshops to support SMEs in credible and effective ESG disclosures, with the calculator forming a core part of these efforts. The latest expansion of the simplified ESG disclosure guide and the calculator's utility was announced in July 2025, reflecting ongoing enhancements and commitments to support SME sustainability reporting.

In summary, the SEDG GHG Emissions Calculator is a standardized, user-friendly tool grounded in international and local data, aimed at enabling Malaysian SMEs to comply with rising ESG disclosure demands and take meaningful steps towards reducing their carbon footprint.
