Large-scale investment allocated for on-the-job training programs
In the vibrant region of Baden-Württemberg, two significant construction projects are reshaping the landscape of Karlsruhe and Geradstetten. These projects, totalling approximately 215 million euros, mark a notable shift in the area's focus towards renewable energy infrastructure and vocational training.
The Chamber of Crafts Karlsruhe's new training academy, slated to be the largest single investment in the chamber's history, is one such project. With an earmarked budget of 130 million euros, the academy will be built on a greenfield site in Neureut, northwest of Karlsruhe. The state of Baden-Württemberg will contribute 25% of the costs, while the federal government will cover 45%, and the Chamber of Crafts will shoulder the remaining 30%.
The existing training academy in the north-west of Karlsruhe, though expanded and modernized over several decades, was found inadequate at the beginning of the 2010s. Recognizing the need for a more suitable training facility, the Chamber of Crafts bought a 28,000 square meter plot from the city two years ago. The new academy will serve as a hub for dual vocational training, particularly focusing on road construction and construction machinery.
Meanwhile, in Geradstetten, the training center is already the largest of the association and the largest educational center for construction machinery in Germany. Despite its size, a feasibility study ultimately favoured a new building at another location due to the infeasibility of a sensible solution on the existing plot. The architectural competition for this new training center was won by the Vienna office of Schenker Salvi Weber Architekten ZT.
While the specific large construction projects in Geradstetten are not explicitly detailed, the region's major projects prominently involve large-scale renewable energy infrastructure led by Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW). Notable projects include the commissioning of an 80 MW solar park in Langenenslingen, the largest photovoltaic installation in Baden-Württemberg, completed under budget and without subsidies, and the planned construction of a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Philippsburg Energy Park near Karlsruhe, with a capacity of 400 MW/800 MWh aimed at stabilizing renewable energy supply, expected by 2027 if approved.
In a broader context, EnBW's offshore wind farm project "He Dreiht" is Germany’s largest offshore wind farm but is situated off the coast and not in Baden-Württemberg or near Karlsruhe or Geradstetten.
The construction industry of Baden-Württemberg has been successful in being included in the project network of the International Building Exhibition IBA27. The industry also received a funding decree of 21 million euros from Minister of Economic Affairs Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut. Off-the-job training has been compulsory for all training companies and trainees in addition to vocational school since the Vocational Training Act came into force in 1969, and the mandatory curriculum for dual vocational training in Baden-Württemberg includes inter-company training.
These construction projects in Karlsruhe and Geradstetten, coupled with the focus on renewable energy infrastructure and vocational training, underscore the region's commitment to supporting Germany's energy transition and fostering skilled workforce development.
