Kerala High Court Appoints Observer for Fair Melsanthi Selection at Sabarimala and Malikappuram Temples
The Kerala High Court has appointed retired judge Justice TR Ramachandran Nair as an observer to oversee the selection of Melsanthis (chief priests) at Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha temple and Malikappuram temple. This comes ahead of the selection process for the year 1201 ME (2025-2026).
The observer's role includes monitoring interviews and the draw of lots for the positions. The Pandalam Royal family will send a young boy and girl to draw lots for the Sabarimala and Malikappuram temples, respectively, as per custom.
The entire process will be videographed, with the materials reviewed by the Court before the draw. To ensure transparency, marks awarded during interviews must be entered with ballpoint pens and countersigned by the observer. These will be kept under the custody of the Devaswom Commissioner. The Travancore Devaswom Board is responsible for arranging necessary facilities for the observer's accommodation and transport.
The appointment of Justice Nair as an observer aims to ensure a fair and transparent selection process for the Melsanthis at the two prominent temples. His oversight will help maintain the integrity of the ancient customs and traditions involved.
