As the March Madness tournament unfolds, the question persists: which college team has a decisive edge over another? While factors such as player chemistry and coaching experience are undoubtedly vital, a new MIT study suggests that the team with the most robust data analysis may be the one to beat.

The study, published this month in the Journal of Sports Economics, reveals that the depth of a team's data analysis department significantly impacts their win-loss record, particularly in the realm of professional basketball. Researchers compared the investment in data analytics across NBA teams with their 12-season win totals. Results showed that teams with a more substantial focus on data analysis were more likely to secure victories.

Factors like a team's roster salary, player experience, coaching consistency, and injuries were all accounted for in the research, and yet the depth of a team's data analytics staff remained a consistent predictor of their wins. For every four-fifths of a data analyst added to a team roster, the researchers estimated that team could gain an additional win per season. This finding is akin to a team increasing its roster salary by $9.6 million for a single additional win.

Henry Wang, a graduate student at MIT's Sports Lab and co-author of the study, comments that the value of data analysts is still not accurately reflected in their salaries in comparison to other team personnel. The team's research emphasizes the tangible impact of data analysis on overall organizational performance.

While this study concentrates on basketball, the authors posit that the findings are relevant to various sports and competitive fields. The study's co-author, Arnab Sarker, PhD '25, from MIT's Institute for Data, Systems and Society, asserts, "Sports provide a controlled environment for data analytics. However, we are curious about the extent to which we can see these effects on general organizational performance."

Basketball analytics' role has expanded since the popularity of the 2011 film "Moneyball," which centered on a baseball team's use of data analysis to gain an edge over wealthier opponents. The analytical approach has since expanded to numerous sports, allowing teams to harness the vast sources of data available today.
