Gold-plated compensation in the business venture
In a recent study commissioned by eight trade chambers in the Stuttgart region, it was found that there is good money to be made in many construction and renovation professions. The study, which evaluated over 8,000 data sets from 2,800 trade businesses, concluded that general statements about low trade wages are not valid.
Trade masters, on average, earn consistently above 4,000 euros gross per month. This equates to an annual salary ranging between €40,000 and €60,000, depending on the trade, region, and experience.
These figures are competitive with technicians and engineers in well-paid sectors. On average, technicians and engineers in Germany earn between €53,000 and €60,000 annually, with some variance based on specialization and location. Engineers, who typically have higher academic qualifications and responsibilities, tend to earn slightly more.
However, there are exceptions. In lucrative trades or on a freelance basis, trade masters can earn salaries comparable to some technician or junior engineer roles. For instance, the top wages for masters are 7,500 euros for masons and concrete workers, and up to 8,000 euros for electricians.
The amount of the wage depends on factors such as the trade, the turnover of the business, and the qualifications and experience of the employee. Many trades pay regular wages of 19 euros per hour or more, with tilers, masons, chimney sweeps, or plumbers earning between 21 and 23 euros per hour.
In many construction and renovation professions, more than 1,000 euros gross per month are paid in the first year of training. Peter Haas, CEO of Handwerk BW, commented that the trades pay competitive wages from the start compared to other sectors.
