In the Krasnoyarsk Region, a Bill Introduces Free Meals for Schoolchildren and Students from Large Families

Get ready for mouth-watering school lunches! A new bill is in the works, offering all schoolchildren and students from multi-child families free meals in educational institutions. The initiative stems directly from the region's governor's orders.

This new policy not only extends to the young but also to students with disabilities. Under the new law, the cost of meals in Arctic region schools will be hiked up slightly. For example, breakfast at a primary school in Dudinka will cost nearly 130 rubles, while for 5-11th graders in Hanga the cost of lunch will soar from 244 to 348 rubles.

From the new academic year, all students hailing from multi-child families will be able to savor these meals, irrespective of their family's financial situation.

The bill is set to impact around 22,000 schoolchildren and more than 5,500 students from technical and vocational schools and colleges. Furthermore, this feeding initiative will be extended to over 2,200 disabled children without a special status.

Mikhail Kotyukov applauded the move, stating that currently, for eligible students to receive a free breakfast or lunch, their family's income level is considered. With the passage of the bill, all school-goers in the region, along with technical and vocational students whose families have three or more children, will be able to chow down in educational institutions at no cost, he explained. Kotyukov noted that the bill was drafted in response to residents' requests, including a plea made during a live broadcast by a resident of Norilsk.

In primary school, lunch or midday meal will be free, while in secondary and higher school, students will enjoy a hot breakfast, a hot lunch, or a hot midday meal.

The budget for the children's and adolescents' meals will be allocated from the regional budget: 388 million rubles in 2025.

The bill is scheduled for discussion during the ZS session on May 29th.
