Trump's Bold Move: Prohibiting Foreign Harvard Students from Entering the U.S.
Foreign students at Harvard will not be granted entry by Trump
In a surprising turn of events, U.S. President Donald Trump has set his sights on Harvard University once more. In response, he plans to restrict almost all foreign nationals seeking to study there from entering the States, initially for a six-month period. This move targets foreign nationals wishing to enter solely or primarily for studying at Harvard or participating in university-organized exchange programs.
The Department of State will also review the visas of foreign students already studying at Harvard, with exceptions made for individuals deemed to be in the national interest.
Trump's Justification
Trump justified his decision by asserting that Harvard's behaviour made it unfit for international students and researchers. He argues that guest institutions must supply the government with essential information to protect national security from foreign students' misconduct. As Harvard has yet to provide the necessary information for the government to maintain security, foreign nationals' access to Harvard through exchange programs is deemed unfavorable to the national interest.
Ongoing Legal Dispute
The U.S. government's intention to prevent Harvard from accepting international students has been public knowledge for some time. Last week, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem initiated the necessary steps, potentially barring the university from admitting new foreign students as part of a particular federal program.
However, a federal judge's injunction currently halts the U.S. government from placing such restrictions on Harvard. The judge's decision is not yet final, pending further legal proceedings involving academic freedom, national security, and political bias accusations.
