Exploring Nocturnal Creatures with Essex Bat Group during their Bat Walk at Parndon Wood Nature Reserve
Essex Bat Group Hosts Informative Bat Walk at Parndon Wood Nature Reserve
The Essex Bat Group recently hosted a captivating Bat Walk at Parndon Wood Nature Reserve, despite the rainy weather resulting in a shortened walk. The event, known for its community-led and relaxed atmosphere, aimed to educate participants about these fascinating creatures.
One of the highlights of the Bat Walk was the use of sonar detectors, which provided a unique experience in hearing bats as they flew and ate during the walk. The Essex Bat Group displayed two bats currently under their care, one of which had a head injury and was in long-term care. Another bat displayed was smaller in size, and the group is still caring for it, feeding and preparing it for release.
The presentation during the Bat Walk included a wealth of information about bats, such as where they live, what they do in the winter, how much food they need, and the different species of bats. Participants also learned about the rapid healing abilities of bats and the current issues humans are causing for these nocturnal creatures.
The Essex Bat Group is a local, volunteer organization based in Essex, dedicated to the conservation and study of bats. They are fully licensed to save and re-release bats, and their dedication to the welfare of bats was evident throughout the event.
Parndon Wood Nature Reserve has been known to host events throughout the year, although there seems to be less number of events due to ECCO no longer looking after the reserve. Despite this, the Bat Walk demonstrated the group's commitment to continuing their educational activities and sharing their knowledge about bats with others.
The Essex Bat Group has several events scheduled for the rest of 2025, including bat-themed talks, walks, and cruises in association with local nature organizations. Some key upcoming events include Bat Talks and Walks, Bat Cruise events, and Bat and Glow Worm Evenings. For the most current and comprehensive schedule, checking the official Essex Bat Group website or contacting them through local wildlife trusts in Essex is advisable.
