Expands Mozambican port of Beira with an investment of 8.6 million by Cornelder

The Port of Beira, one of Mozambique's most significant economic hubs, is set for a significant transformation with the government's planned investment of $290 million (€278 million) in October 2023. This investment, aimed at expanding and modernizing the port, is part of a larger initiative to make the Port of Beira a state-of-the-art logistics platform.

The expansion and modernization program, led by concessionaire Cornelder, is expected to boost cargo throughput significantly. Jan De Vries, the CEO of Cornelder, plans to invest approximately 640 million meticais (~$8.6 million) to modernize infrastructure, acquire new equipment, and expand port facilities.

Key innovations include the acquisition of 30 new forklift trucks and an expansion of warehouse space by 3,000 square meters, which is expected to double the cargo handling volume to over 300,000 metric tons per year. Additionally, a private mobile network by Sedna Africa will be deployed, providing high-throughput, reliable connectivity to enhance operational efficiency, safety, automation, and digitalization at the port.

This modernization strategy focuses on infrastructure improvement, digitization, safety, and automation, transforming the Port of Beira into a logistics powerhouse not only servicing the Sofala province but the wider Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

In support of these private-sector initiatives, the Mozambican government's investment will complement Cornelder's projects and address congestion and capacity challenges at a national level. Together, these efforts aim to significantly increase the port’s efficiency, throughput, and operational capacity, reduce cargo handling times, and attract more trade, thereby boosting the regional economy and employment.

The Port of Beira's expansion and modernization are not limited to the province of Sofala but also extend to the level of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). This means that the expanded port will be used for the import and export of goods by neighbouring countries, making it a crucial logistics platform for the region.

Jan De Vries, the CEO of Cornelder, has stated that they have various innovative projects aimed at making the Port of Beira an excellent logistics platform. The Ministry of Transport and Logistics of Mozambique is also conducting studies to address truck congestion issues at the access to the Port of Beira.

With these planned innovations and investments, the Port of Beira is poised to become a more efficient logistics platform, serving not only Mozambique but also the wider SADC region.

  1. The finance sector is likely to be impacted positively due to the increased cargo throughput and operational efficiency at the Port of Beira.
  2. The technology industry could see investment opportunities in the deployment of a private mobile network by Sedna Africa, aiming to enhance operational efficiency and digitalization at the port.
  3. The home-and-garden sector may benefit from potential business ventures arising from the expanded port, as it could provide easier access for importing and exporting goods related to home improvements.
  4. For the education-and-self-development department, this project could serve as a case study on regional infrastructure development and economic growth, promoting further insights and learning opportunities.
  5. The real-estate industry might experience growth in response to the increased economic activity taking place within the Port of Beira, potentially leading to an uptick in property developments and related business opportunities in the surrounding areas.
