Expanded student housing campus in Germany to witness notable expansion
The student city in Freimann, Munich, is known for its extensive accommodation complexes and close proximity to major public transport nodes. Recently, there have been plans to expand and densify this student-centric area, with the focus on creating apartments for apprentices and municipal employees on municipal plots.
In 2020, the Christian Social Union (CSU) submitted a master plan proposal for the area around the U-Bahnhof Studentenstadt. This plan outlined potential densification of the student union and additional living space on the parking lot and bus station. The planning department's resolution suggested that the student union could potentially be densified by about 1200 spaces.
However, no further action was taken on the expansion plans by the city and the student union in 2020. The student union, on the other hand, has been actively engaged in renovating existing facilities. They have already renovated the Hans-Scholl-Hall and house 11 and reopened them. They are also currently dealing with the renovation of houses 10 and 13 in the Neustadt.
Recently, the MVG has proposed building a high-rise on stilts above the bus station in the student city. This proposal is yet to be finalised and will likely form part of a feasibility study that the student union is planning to initiate for the densification of the student city, covering the property of the parking deck and the area of the old town.
Green councilor Florian Schoenemann believes the bus station and adjacent Park&Ride parking lot offer a unique opportunity to create a young, urban, and sustainable quarter. SPD councilor Lars Mentrup and Green councilor Florian Schoenemann have submitted a joint application to continue and adapt the expansion plans for the student city.
The Free State is responsible for student housing, but Mentrup believes it's important to drive the planning forward together for potential synergies. The plans affect the property of the student union, the Park&Ride facility, and the bus station, making it crucial for all parties involved to work collaboratively.
For the most current detailed plans specifically addressing Freimann's student city expansion—covering infrastructure changes, impact on transport facilities, or student union adjustments—it is recommended to consult official Munich city planning resources or the Student Union of Munich's announcements directly. The Freimann student city, being Germany's largest student settlement, is planning to grow and evolve, offering exciting possibilities for the future of student accommodation and urban development in Munich.
- In their joint application, SPD councilor Lars Mentrup and Green councilor Florian Schoenemann have proposed that the student city expansion should include education-and-self-development facilities.
- The proposed feasibility study for the densification of the student city covering the property of the parking deck and the area of the old town may focus on integrating education-and-self-development centers as part of the urban development.
