Raw Birthday Blues: Navigating Celebrations with Confidence

Embrace the art of setting boundaries to make your birthday a more enjoyable, connected experience with those you cherish. It's all about expressing your wants, needs, and limiting the uncomfortableness often associated with birthday celebrations.

Once upon a time in a dimly lit bowling alley, I found myself fixated on the stinkin' shoes. Here I was, attending a festive gathering, yet all I could think about was whether or not I actually needed to wear these frickin' bowling shoes if I wasn't bowling. I mean, if I wasn't going to bowl, what was the point, right?

But alas, it seems I was bound by unspoken social norms. I stood there, questioning every move I made, wondering if my choices would be judged by those around me.

I wish I could have stood tall

Fast forward to a business gathering in the vibrant city of Chicago. A crew of creative innovators, about 30 people I'd only recently connected with. You might think I'd feel excited, right? But, as an introvert, the thought of meeting new people and, eventually, having to schmooze, sent chills down my spine.

Adding to my anxiety was the ever-looming feeling of being put on the spot, of having surprises sprung on me. You see, I'm no fan of being surprised. I appreciate a text, an email, or a card in the mail, but when it comes to loud, shocking celebrations with candles and song, no thanks. It isn't that I hate my birthday. In fact, I'm grateful for every year it rolls around. Yet, I can't help but feel uncomfortable being the center of attention.

Waking up on my birthday that year in my hotel room, I felt a sense of relief. No need to stress about surprise parties or performances, at least not in a restaurant this year. I had enjoyed sweet messages from loved ones and a beautiful bouquet from my husband. I felt content, knowing I wouldn't have to deal with the awkwardness of birthday songs or blown-out candles for the rest of the day.

But, alas, my happy moment was short-lived. During a workshop that afternoon, one new friend greeted me with a cheerful "Happy Birthday, Courtney!" My stomach twisted into a knot. Damn, how did she figure it out? I'd never mentioned it to anyone. Now I found myself on edge, anxious, and wary of impending surprises as I made my way to the bowling alley.

Saying 'No' to Surprises: A Bold Move Towards Freedom

As much as I wished I could have just enjoyed the moment, I couldn't shake the feeling of dread. It wasn't just about the shoes anymore — it was about feeling in control of my own experiences and setting boundaries. We all deserve the freedom to enjoy our lives on our own terms.

It wasn't until later, after much self-reflection, that I found the courage to state my needs and only then did I finally breathe a sigh of relief. Here's what I learned:

1. Speak Your Truth

Tell your loved ones how you feel — clearly, respectfully, and without apology. By expressing your needs and boundaries, you allow others to connect with you more authentically.

2. Prepare Ahead of Time

If there are certain traditions or activities you'd prefer to avoid, have a conversation with those close to you beforehand to head off any potential unwanted surprises. The more they know, the better they can understand you and accommodate your wishes.

3. Say 'No' When Necessary

It's okay to stand up for yourself and say "no" when something makes you uncomfortable. It's your life, after all.

4. Find What Brings You Joy

Focus on activities and traditions that bring you joy and foster a strong connection with the people you care about.

5. Practice Self-Care

Take time for yourself during the celebration if needed. It's important to prioritize your feelings and well-being.

By taking these steps, you can create a birthday celebration that you'll truly enjoy, while still feeling connected with those who matter to you.

And remember, your boundaries are a map of you — they help others understand who you are and how to love you. So, let's break down those fences and embrace the freedom of setting boundaries!
