Essential Needs for Existence: A Look at Life's Fundamentals

In a world often divided by nationalism, the Universal House of Justice, the democratically elected leadership body of the world's Baha'is, called for a shift in 1985. They advocated that unbridled nationalism must give way to a broader loyalty: love for all humanity. This call was not a new one, as it echoed the sentiments expressed by Abdu'l-Baha, a prominent figure in the Baha'i Faith, who spoke of hope for the elimination of hatred and dissension, and the emergence of love and unity in a speech in London.

Beyond the basic survival needs of food, water, shelter, and clothing, the Baha'i Faith teaches that humans have unique spiritual and social needs that are essential for their full potential and unity as a race. These needs include spiritual growth and development, service to others, recognition and acceptance of divine guidance, and unity and harmony among all people.

Spiritual growth and development, according to the Baha'i teachings, are vital for overcoming challenges and trials, which are viewed as opportunities for advancement rather than mere obstacles. This growth is nurtured through prayer, meditation, study of divine teachings, and service to humanity.

Serving in the "Cause of God" is fundamental, comparable to ploughing soil to enrich it so growth can occur. This service fosters the expansion of love, harmony, and the spiritual qualities that unite people.

True progress, the Baha'i Faith asserts, requires recognising and obeying the new spiritual teachings brought by divine Manifestations (prophets). This obedience is inseparable from recognition and is necessary for both individual and collective advancement.

The Baha'i Faith stresses the oneness of humanity and the need to cultivate love and harmony that transcends racial, religious, and national differences. This unity is powerful and capable of illuminating the world, reflecting the metaphor: “Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch”. Promoting reconciliation and common understanding among diverse groups is a unique human need that fosters the collective well-being of the race.

Unbridled nationalism, on the other hand, can lead to claiming loyalty to a country, regardless of its moral or ethical standing. It hinders the full development and potential of humanity, according to the Baha'i Faith. The Faith advocates for the entire world, not just one nation, and for all of humanity, not just one race, class, or country. The world, according to the Baha'i faith, should become one native land, with different races considered as one.

The Baha'i faith promotes a call towards love, care, and unity among all people. The teachings urge people to transcend their national identities and develop a consciousness as citizens of the world. When unjust actions taken by nations go unchecked, it is a reminder of the importance of this call. The world needs to become a mirror of the divine, with human hearts flowing together in mutual embrace.
