Election Day for Ducsu: Last chance for nominations, announcement of panels imminent

The nomination process for the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election is underway, with a significant number of candidates from various student organizations submitting their nomination papers. However, leaders of some major student organizations have yet to collect their nomination papers, citing strategic reasons.

As of the sixth day of the nomination process, a total of 125 students have collected nomination papers, with more expected to join in the coming days. The deadline for submitting nomination papers is 4:00 pm on Monday.

According to the briefing on Sunday afternoon, a total of 19 candidates have filed for the Vice-President (VP) post, 2 for General Secretary (GS), 5 for Assistant General Secretary (AGS), 44 for Secretary, and 55 for member positions.

The leaders of major student organizations, such as Chhatra Dal and Islamic Chhatra Shibir, have not collected their nomination papers primarily because some key parties have not announced full panels, and there seems to be a lack of unified participation or competition from these groups at this stage.

Ganesh Chandra Roy, president of the Dhaka University branch of Chhatra Dal, has stated that the organization will formally announce its decision later. Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed, convener of a Chhatra Dal hall branch, has said that draft panel lists for each hall are being prepared and will be submitted to DU branch leaders tonight.

Similarly, Kazi Ashiq, the organizational secretary of the Islamic Chhatra Shibir DU branch, has stated that their leaders have not yet collected nomination papers. By 11:00 am on Monday, Shibir members will prepare to submit their nominations and announce their panel.

Besides student organizations, a significant number of independent candidates are also expected to contest this year. The official campaign started on August 26, 2025, and voting is scheduled for 9 September.

The DU administration is facilitating the election while addressing security concerns related to some candidates. Historically, DUCSU elections have faced challenges from student political organizations being hesitant or opposing participation, which may still influence current leaders' decisions.

The preliminary list of candidates will be published on 21 August, and the final list on 26 August. The election process is ongoing, with many candidates from several organizations having submitted nomination papers and some withdrawing them. However, some major student leaders may still be in strategic deliberations or waiting until nomination withdrawal deadlines are passed.

The DUCSU election is a crucial event for the students of Dhaka University, and the ongoing competition and strategic decisions by the major student organizations are making the election environment politically sensitive and interesting. Stay tuned for more updates.

Education and self-development news has emerged following the ongoing DUCSU election, with major student organizations like Chhatra Dal and Islamic Chhatra Shibir yet to collect their nomination papers.
