In the early weeks of a new school year, bullying relationships often take root and can persist into the following academic term. This is a critical time for educators to make statements and enact policies that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all students.

Bullying is often driven by a desire for popularity and reputation, especially at the start of a new school year. It's essential to understand that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to bullying behavior.

One effective strategy for students who find themselves in such situations is to remove themselves from spaces where a bully may be present. However, seeking support from a trusted teacher, parent, or classmate can also provide a much-needed circle of support.

Finding a group to connect with can be particularly beneficial for students who are victims of bullying. A supportive group can offer a sense of belonging and help students feel more confident in navigating the school environment.

Professor Tony Volk, a member of the Brock Research on Aggression and Victimization Experiences (BRAVE) group at Brock University, is a Child and Youth Studies expert. His research focuses on understanding and addressing bullying and its impact on young people.

Unfortunately, there has been an uptick in violence in Ontario schools. However, school authorities who have managed to reverse this trend include local school boards, the Ontario Ministry of Education, and community safety organisations working together to implement preventive measures and policies.

These collaborative efforts have proven effective in creating a safer and more positive learning environment for all students. By focusing on prevention, support, and community engagement, we can take significant strides in combating bullying and fostering a culture of kindness and respect in our schools.
