Dortmund Police Tackle School Route Safety with Education and Visibility

Dortmund Police, led by Deputy Head of Traffic Service Mr. Marvin Laumen and his team, including Mr. Tim Krüger, Mr. Frank Meuffels, Ms. Olga Hagen, and others, are dedicated to ensuring safe school journeys for children in Dortmund and Lünen. The team works tirelessly to educate and protect young commuters, with a focus on improving visibility and teaching traffic rules.

In recent years, accidents on school routes have been a concern. In 2024, five children were injured, a slight decrease from the six injured in 2023. To mitigate risks, the police recommend using reflective clothing and well-maintained bikes and helmets. They also stress the importance of parents as role models in teaching traffic rules and safe behavior.

Parent taxis, while convenient, can cause congestion and parking issues, increasing risks for children on foot or by bike. To address this, the Dortmund Police uses a traffic puppet theater to educate children about road safety. The team, led by Mr. Laumen and his colleagues, aims to tackle unique causes of accidents, such as weather, season, local conditions, and driver/pedestrian behavior. Bus stops, in particular, require extra caution from drivers due to children suddenly emerging.

Dortmund Police, with Mr. Marvin Laumen at the helm, is committed to ensuring safe school journeys for children. They provide contact information for further questions: Theresa Stritzke, telephone 0231/132-1026, email [email protected], website https://dortmund.polizei.nrw/. By working together with parents and the community, they strive to create a safer environment for children traveling to school on foot, by bike, or by bus and train.
