Diving from the theatrical glory of "Grease" to the academic depths of Ethnomusicology

Allie Schulz, a talented performer and academic, has embarked on an unconventional journey that spans both Broadway and the halls of UCLA's prestigious Herb Alpert School of Music.

Born and raised in Michigan, Allie graduated from the Interlochen Center for the Arts at the tender age of 18. With a passion for music burning bright, she made the move to Los Angeles, enrolling at LACC as a Music major.

Her breakthrough came in 2007 when she competed on the reality TV show "Grease: You're the One That I Want!" on NBC in Los Angeles. Although she did not win the competition, she was soon cast in the Broadway musical "Grease," playing the iconic role of Rizzo on the national tour after understudying Sandy, Patty, and Cha-Cha for the Broadway production.

After her tour ended, Allie decided to broaden her horizons and pursued a new challenge. She attended Hunter College in New York City, where her studies inspired her ability to make music and informed the music she writes.

In 2020, Allie transferred to UCLA as a first-year student, majoring in Ethnomusicology. Her dedication to her studies did not go unnoticed, as she was awarded a dedicated transfer student scholarship from the Herb Alpert Foundation.

At UCLA, Allie also found an opportunity to teach, receiving a fellowship to teach at the UCLA Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools in Koreatown. She encourages other students to finish their degree without having the whole plan figured out, believing that the journey itself will shape their future.

Allie's journey did not follow a traditional path after high school, but she trusts that it will change her in an important way. She finds joy in watching students create music and feels it is a meaningful experience.

In addition to her performing career, Allie has also expressed her intention to pursue a master's degree in education. She believes that having a degree from the School of Music at UCLA in Ethnomusicology carries enormous credibility.

Despite the challenges she faced, such as gathering college transcripts due to attending four colleges and a short time spent studying in Argentina, Allie's determination and passion for music and education have led her to an exciting and fulfilling career. In Los Angeles, she continues to write music, play shows, and release records under the artist name LAE.
