Discover a Collection of Emerging Artists and Their Exhibits at the Schoenberg Art Stroll
In a pioneering move, two UCLA students, Ashley Dao and Dalton Mumphrey, have initiated the first-ever Schoenberg Art Walk. Recognising a need for interdisciplinary collaboration among student artists at the university, the duo drew inspiration from the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk to create this unique event.
The Schoenberg Art Walk, a student-driven initiative, aims to bridge the gap between artistic schools at UCLA, fostering a stronger community among students. The event will take place at the Schoenberg Music Building, with special decor, food, and drinks enhancing the experience for attendees.
Seven live musical performances are scheduled to take place in the lobby and courtyard, while three visual artists will showcase their work at stations throughout the halls. Additionally, three film screenings will be held in different classrooms, and an additional installation will be featured in another classroom.
Ashley Dao, a third-year musicology student and a recipient of the prestigious Beinecke Scholarship, and Dalton Mumphrey, a third-year Global Jazz Studies major, have put in considerable effort to make this event a reality. Apart from their studies, performances, extracurriculars, and daily living, they have been actively reaching out to students, administrators, and leadership at UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television, School of the Arts and Architecture, and their home base at the School of Music.
Both Dao and Mumphrey are members of the School of Music's Undergraduate Student Advisory Board. They identified a problem: student artists at UCLA were disconnected from one another, despite being spread across several schools. Their solution? The Schoenberg Art Walk.
The response to the Schoenberg Art Walk has been overwhelmingly positive, resulting in applications from various artists. Mumphrey expresses hope that the event has built a bridge between the artistic schools at UCLA, reflecting a broader trend in university art events emphasising cross-disciplinary connection and community-building among artists.
Dao and Mumphrey hope their efforts have established a framework for future events and stronger connections among students.
