Navigating the Tech Tangle: The Teacher's Digital Dilemma in Schools
Teachers' Struggles with Digitalization: Underlying Pressures They Face - Digitisation's Impact on Educators: Unraveling Pressure and Adaptation Challenges
In the era of digital transformation, schools are rapidly modernizing their teaching methods, but the journey isn't always smooth. From broken printers to stubborn software, teachers are left plugging the gaps when tech hits the fan. "Digitalization is dumping extra work and digital stress on teachers without mercy," discloses Thilo Hartmann, Union boss of Education and Science Union (GEW) in Hesse.
Teachers rely on technology to deliver their lessons, but when things go wrong, there's rarely a helping hand. "When technology fails, there's no one to call for help. Teachers have to fend for themselves," Hartmann admits. In many schools, those with tech skills pitch in as makeshift IT support, juggling their teaching duties with tech troubleshooting.
Upkeeping devices is a time-consuming task
With growing numbers of devices in schools, keeping them all running smoothly isn't a side job. "In the corporate world, you've got an entire IT department – schools don't," Hartmann remarks. School IT rooms are frequently plagued with device breakdowns, software glitches, or connectivity issues. Someone nimble with a screwdriver or a USB stick is needed to keep classes from derailing.
Data and system protection, software updates, and many passwords later, tech problems are an enormous time-suck and require learning new systems and systems of communication.
Kassel Steps Up
In Kassel, the "IT Supporter@School" project is helping teachers overcome the tech challenges. The city has hired twelve IT supporters who support six schools each. Mayor Nicole Maisch (Greens) explains, "These are teachers, not IT professionals. They need help."
IT supporter Thorben Schröder reveals he takes care of on-site problems, from a broken iPad to minor hardware snags. Schools contact him for issues and wishes and count on him for regular visits and in emergencies. Carsten Horstmann, vice headmaster at the Johann-Amos-Comenius School, is relieved to have IT help on call, relieving stress and freeing up time.
Infrastructure Revamp
Maisch insists that the digital infrastructure in schools was made possible with generous support from the federal and state governments through the Digital Pact I. The objective now is to ensure reliable digital teaching across the city's 55 schools. "Teachers should have faith that their technology will work, allowing them to focus on teaching," Maisch adds.
Ministry on Board
The Hessian Ministry of Culture acknowledges that digitalization of schools confronts complex challenges. While progress has been made in structuring, skill development, and resource allocation, continuous effort is needed to sustain the evolution of digital learning tools.
The purpose of digitalization is to empower teachers with administrative relief and individual student support. The state maintains that digital services provided by school carriers release teachers from many tasks, and the state champions technical support to lessen the teachers' daily dependence on IT equipment.
Hessian Schools: Progress and Pitfalls
Digitalization in Hessian schools has come a long way, spearheaded by increased investment in school IT infrastructure. But as Hartmann points out, "While the Corona pandemic has given digitalization a massive boost, we're still a long way from where we want to be."
Immediate funding is required to repair the backlog of equipment and mitigate future expenses. But Hartmann is also pressing for expanded media education and equitable digital tools for all students. "Digitalization isn't an end in itself, but part of media education that needs careful scrutiny," Hartmann asserts.
