Day-Long Learning: Melanchthonstraße School in Bremer serves as a nationwide benchmark

In the heart of Bremen, the "Montag Foundation Youth and Society" has been working alongside a local school and after-school care centre for a year, aiming to transform it into a full-day school. This project, named "Full Day and Space", was presented on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, in the gymnasium of the elementary school.

Senator for Education, Sascha Karolin Aulepp, was present at the project presentation, which showcased the innovative approach of integrating morning and afternoon activities with minimal renovation. Child-friendly rhythmization, a different fire protection concept, and adapted furniture were some of the measures implemented to achieve this.

The school in question is one of four pilot schools nationwide, selected from 40 applications. The project aims to demonstrate that pedagogy, organization, and space can be thought together through a joint process to utilize existing buildings for full-day education with minimal structural renovation.

The goal of the project is to offer a model for other schools and education authorities to follow in converting schools into full-day schools with minimal construction. By doing so, it could potentially reduce the need for new construction of full-day rooms and dining halls in schools.

The success of the "Full Day and Space" project lies in its comprehensive integration of learning and care, collaboration among stakeholders, qualified and flexible staffing, adequate infrastructure and space, individualized support and inclusion, and linking education to Bremen's local ecosystem.

The insights gained from the project at the Melanchthonstraße school are intended to be used by the state of Bremen for further locations. The House of the Senator for Children and Education will continue the project, aiming to implement the jointly developed integrated usage concept, which includes pedagogical, organizational, and spatial measures, in the coming years.

As spatial integration of school and youth welfare, as well as full-day use of all existing rooms, is still relatively uncommon nationwide, the "Full Day and Space" project in Bremen could pave the way for a more flexible and efficient educational system in the future.
