Cycling Globetrotters: Students from Fellbach Metaphorically Circumnavigate the Earth

In the picturesque Rems-Murr district, schools have been embracing an eco-friendly initiative as part of the school cycling event. The competition, now in its third year, aims to promote climate-friendly mobility among students.

The event, which is part of the "Stadtradeln" action and the special competition "School Cycling," saw 62 participating institutions compete against each other. The goal was to collect as many kilometers by bike as possible within three weeks.

Prizes were awarded in three categories: primary schools, secondary schools, and special educational institutions. The school that accumulated the most cycled kilometers per total number of students in the district would be rewarded with a visit from an ice cream truck.

Grundschule Nellmersbach covered a distance of 9,121 kilometers in around 500 individual trips, which corresponds to a bike tour to South Africa. Hermann-Hesse-Realschule in Schmiden, on the other hand, cycled more than once around the Earth, figuratively speaking, with a total of 43,262 kilometers in over 3,700 individual trips.

Frobelschule Schorndorf recorded 8,417 kilometers and 940 individual trips, equivalent to the CO2 avoidance of a round trip flight for two people to Rome. In total, approximately 449,000 kilometers were covered by bike during the event.

The competition also included subsidies for the school festival, making it an exciting and rewarding experience for students and staff alike. The event encouraged students to participate in climate-friendly activities, not just on their way to school, but also for leisure activities or for fun.

Schools in the Rems-Murr district were not only competing against each other locally, but also against other schools in Baden-Württemberg. Various schools in the district received prizes sponsored by the district, making it a celebration of eco-friendly mobility and community spirit.

For the latest and most accurate figures on the total kilometers covered in the school cycling event this year, we recommend checking the official Rems-Murr district website or their school-related event pages, press releases or local newspapers covering the event, or the organizing body for the school cycling event in Rems-Murr (e.g., local sports or education authorities).

Students at participating institutions could engage in both education-and-self-development and sports, as they pedaled towards their goals during the school cycling event. The commitment to eco-friendly activities, such as this competition, extends beyond commuting to school, encouraging students to incorporate sustainable practices into their leisure and recreational pursuits as well.
