Crossing Borders: Encounter of Greek and German Young Women

In a historic gathering, girls and young women from Wiesbaden, Germany, and the Greek community of Kryoneri came together for a week-long collaboration that culminated in the German-Greek girls' meeting "Girls across Borders - Visions for Tomorrow." The event took place on August 15, 2020, in the Great Hall of the Town Hall in Wiesbaden.

The meeting was a result of close cooperation between the support association of the Wilhelm-Heinrich-von-Riehl School and the Greek partner organization Filoxenia. The collaboration focused on self-determination, equality, and intercultural exchange, with the aim of fostering mutual empowerment and strengthening young women across borders.

Social Affairs Commissioner Dr. Patricia Becher welcomed guests from both countries and led them on a tour of the Town Hall's historic rooms. Dr. Becher emphasized the importance of encouraging girls to think beyond borders, ask questions, and take a stand.

During the meeting, participants presented their experiences and projects, including workshops on role models and stereotypes, joint creative projects, and excursions. They also presented their ideas and wishes for a fair society to Dr. Becher in the form of a self-designed creative work.

The collaboration was not just limited to the meeting in Wiesbaden. Students from Biebrich will travel to Florina, Greece, next week as part of the same Erasmus program. An Erasmus-funded program had previously brought students from Greece to Wiesbaden. Both organizations are committed to topics such as equality, environmental issues, and remembrance work.

The German-Greek youth exchange "Two Nations - One Nature" celebrated its tenth anniversary in the Town Hall last week. This long-standing exchange programme is another testament to the strong ties between the two nations.

The meeting was a significant step towards promoting intercultural exchange and fostering understanding between young people in Germany and Greece. It serves as a beacon of hope for a future where borders are not barriers but bridges for collaboration and mutual growth.

They did, however, mention various initiatives involving girls, women, and refugees in Greece and Germany, such as empowerment programs for women and educational programs for vulnerable groups.
