Covid-19 rapid testing services offered at educational institutions across Latvia
In the past two weeks, a concerning trend has emerged in the educational institutions of Jelgava and Riga. According to recent reports, a total of 97 children have fallen ill with Covid-19, and 54 teachers have also been affected in Jelgava schools. This alarming increase is accompanied by a rise in the number of cases in Riga schools, with 270 cases identified last week, marking a 30% increase from the previous week.
The Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) has confirmed that the proportion of inpatient patients with respiratory conditions is also on the rise. In response, Ilze Araja, the SPKC spokeswoman, has urged people in at-risk groups and seniors to get vaccinated against Covid-19.
Acute respiratory illnesses are present in facilities in Jelgava, and the increase in morbidity is also felt in Riga's 64th secondary school, led by Principal Edgars Zīverts. Interestingly, several schools in Jelgava have around 1,200 students.
The total number of pupils in Jelgava schools stands at 7,500. Despite the rising cases, the algorithm for handling suspected illnesses in schools remains unchanged. Those experiencing symptoms should stay at home, and self-tests are recommended for suspected contacts.
In Riga schools, no specific testing algorithm is used; instead, they are employed as needed. Self-tests are also available and distributed in many places to children in Riga schools.
The announcement about an increase in disease cases in Riga was made by medical professionals during the pandemic, reporting a record number of severe Covid-19 cases treated there. This underscores the importance of adhering to health and safety protocols in schools and the wider community.
As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial that everyone remains vigilant and follows the recommended guidelines to help curb the spread of the virus and ensure the safety of our children and educators.
