Construction Initiated for Base Jacket on BalWin Delta Offshore Structure
In the heart of Germany, significant strides are being made in the energy sector, as two major offshore grid connection projects, BalWin4 and LanWin1, are set to be connected in the Unterweser and Rastede areas respectively.
TenneT, a leading player in the European electricity grid, has awarded contracts worth EUR 23 billion for 22 GW of grid connections in the North Sea. A significant portion of this investment will go towards the development of BalWin4 and LanWin1.
The BalWin Delta, a key component of the BalWin4 offshore grid connection project, will transmit 2 GW of renewable energy to shore from the end of 2029. The consortium of Jan De Nul, LS Cable, and Denys has been tasked with realizing the cable connections for BalWin4 and LanWin1 in Lower Saxony, Germany.
Meanwhile, McDermott International is responsible for the design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning of offshore converter substation platforms for these two 2 GW HVDC grid connection systems. The jacket foundation for the BalWin Delta offshore converter platform, weighing approximately 13,000 tonnes, is being delivered under a contract signed between GE Vernova, McDermott International, and TenneT in 2023.
The fabrication of the BalWin Delta topside began at McDermott's yard in Batam, Indonesia, in June. Construction on the BalWin Delta Offshore Platform has already commenced, with the platform planned for installation in the North Sea in 2028.
The BalWin4 project's central piece is a significant step towards Germany's commitment to renewable energy. The consortium for the BalWin4 cable connections project in Lower Saxony consists of TenneT and Amprion.
Simultaneously, LanWin5 will be connected in the Rastede area, Germany, further strengthening the country's offshore grid infrastructure. These projects are part of TenneT's larger strategy to connect 4.8 GW of offshore wind farms to the grid by 2030.
These advancements in Germany's North Sea are a testament to the country's dedication to a sustainable future, paving the way for a greener and more energy-efficient Europe.
