In the heart of Gaza, a land known for its bountiful harvests, an unsettling truth has been born: people here are dying of hunger. Long gone are the days when we would confidently assert that nobody dies of hunger; it's our old adage that has proven deceptive. This harsh reality has been brutally exposed during the ongoing conflict.

Nowadays, it seems that hunger is as relentless as the bombs that rain upon us. Perhaps you're already aware, or perhaps you choose to turn a blind eye. In any case, bread, flour, and medicine are now our last ties to life. Yet, in this desperate situation, humiliation is added to our plight. Aid, which should offer hope, has been transformed into a weapon of war, a source of humiliation, a lever of power.

To get a morsel to eat, we’re forced to risk our lives, advance towards a meal that may well be our last. The cruelty intensifies. Aid distribution is overseen by private security forces. Along the way, soldiers man checkpoints, guns at the ready, deciding who eats and who dies of hunger. Under a sky without shelter, while bombs crush our children, we endure this agony.

Many here speak of a slow and insidious agony, a torment that crushes bodies and tears apart souls. In the clinics of the Doctors of the World, one can witness this torment as thousands of parents wait for hours, not for a meal, but for a handful of nutritional supplements to alleviate the silent pain of malnutrition. The distress is not limited to thin bodies; it's seen in the lifeless eyes, colorless cheeks, and small bodies too exhausted to cry.

For months now, children have been dying of hunger. Every day, we see hunger and fear gnawing at the children of Gaza. In April alone, over 65,000 children had fallen victim to acute malnutrition. The official death toll stands at 58, but who knows how many lives slip away unnoticed, shrouded in silence?

Experience has shown us various kinds of death: under the rubble, in the grip of the siege, and now from the bite of hunger and the void of abandonment. The world bears witness to our relentless struggle, but remains silent, watchful as a passive observer. However, we stand tall, with empty hands reaching out, our hearts slowly suffocating as we wait for aid that never comes.
