Celebrating 60 Years of the UCLA Music of China Ensemble

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is marking a significant milestone as it celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Music of China Ensemble. Established by the late Professor Tsun-Yuen Lui, this student and faculty ensemble has been dedicated to promoting Chinese arts and culture at UCLA and beyond for six decades.

Under the current direction of Professor Chi Li, the Music of China Ensemble showcases traditional and contemporary Chinese music, featuring a variety of instruments such as the erhu, pipa, guzheng, dizi, and percussion. The ensemble's repertoire spans from classical Chinese folk melodies to modern compositions inspired by Chinese heritage.

Each year, over 100 UCLA students from various academic areas join the ensemble to study traditional Chinese instruments and perform Chinese music, folk dance, and opera. The ensemble's performances can be found at university events, cultural festivals, and collaborations with other music departments.

The Music of China Ensemble's efforts extend beyond the UCLA campus, reaching a wider audience in the greater Los Angeles community. Donations to the Music of China Ensemble Support Fund play a crucial role in this outreach, providing funding for performances and the maintenance and repair of the Chinese instrument collection.

Your gift to the Music of China Ensemble Support Fund ensures that UCLA students can continue to study and perform Chinese musical arts, keeping the rich tradition alive for future generations. If you wish to contribute, you can find more information on the UCLA official music department or ethnomusicology program publications or websites.

As we celebrate the Year of the Dog, let us also celebrate the enduring legacy of the UCLA Music of China Ensemble, a testament to the university's commitment to cultural diversity and artistic excellence.
