Changes in work permits and tariffs to take effect in Sweden by August 2025
Sweden is gearing up for a series of changes in its immigration policies and work permit requirements, while also preparing for a month filled with festivals and the much-anticipated crayfish season.
From August 21st, Riksdag committees will reconvene to discuss and assess potential adjustments to the country's immigration rules. One of the key areas under review is the work permit salary threshold. The report will examine whether the current requirement should be tightened further, or if it should be introduced for certain permits where it is not currently required.
However, no formal decision has been made on where the final salary threshold will actually end up. As of now, the general requirement for a work permit is that the salary must be at least 80% of the median salary published by Statistics Sweden (SCB), which is currently SEK 29,680 per month.
In a move to attract more skilled professionals, Sweden lowered the salary threshold for the EU Blue Card from 1.5 times to 1.25 times the average gross salary as of January 1, 2025. This adjustment does not apply to researchers and doctoral students, who are exempt from the minimum salary requirement when applying for residence permits for research or doctoral studies.
The Migration Agency is expected to present a list of proposed exceptions to Sweden's work permit salary threshold to the government by August 1st. Meanwhile, the government plans to raise the work permit threshold for new permits to 100 percent of the median salary (SEK 37,100), with exemptions for some categories of workers.
A significant change affecting hunters is the ban on AR-15 semi-automatic rifles for hunting, effective from August 1st. Hunters who already have a license for an AR-15 will have two years to meet the requirements for a sport shooting license to keep their gun, otherwise they will have to sell it or trade it in to the government for 100 percent of the market value.
On a lighter note, Sweden's festival season is in full swing. Malmöfestivalen will take place between August 8th and 15th, while Way out West music festival will be held in Gothenburg from August 7th-9th. The crayfish season officially starts on August 7th, marking a celebrated tradition in Sweden, despite no public holidays being observed in August.
In international news, EU's trade chief Maros Sefcovic plans to speak with his US counterparts regarding the ongoing negotiations, as US President Donald Trump is threatening to impose 30 percent tariffs on the European Union if no agreement is reached by August 1st.
