Celebration Focus of Offenbach County: "Joy and Contentment"
In the heart of Offenbach, Germany, the Youth Welfare Office (Jugendamt) plays a crucial role in safeguarding the well-being of children who find themselves in difficult circumstances. The reasons for children being placed in foster care in Offenbach align with the general responsibilities of the Youth Welfare Office across Germany.
The office intervenes primarily when children face neglect, abuse, or a lack of proper care and support at home. Specific reasons include neglect or abuse, family difficulties due to illness, substance abuse, or severe social or economic problems; parental incapacity due to incarceration, mental health issues, or other incapacities; legal and social support needs such as unmarried mothers or single parents needing assistance; and support during crises.
When safety or well-being is at risk, foster care is arranged to protect children from harm and provide stable living conditions. The Youth Welfare Office in Offenbach provides counselling, parenting support, and assistance to families to prevent the necessity of foster placements. However, when the situation calls for it, foster care is the last resort when all other support measures have been exhausted and there is no improvement in sight.
Recently, the Adoption and Foster Children's Service, headed by Jana Sher, hosted the "Lucky Charm" festival at the Kolpinghaus in Seligenstadt. The event was a sign of appreciation for foster families in the district of Offenbach, who provide a loving and secure home for children daily. Around 80 people, including 30 children and young people aged between 10 months and 15 years, attended the event.
Younger children participated in games and craft activities, while older children enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere by the campfire. A highlight of the event was the theater play "Leo and the Ghost Mouse." Foster families also participate in regular events for support, exchange, and networking.
Foster families in Offenbach receive intensive support from the Adoption and Foster Children's Service. Jana Sher, head of the Adoption and Foster Children's Service, expressed thanks to the foster parents for their contributions, which were acknowledged regularly by the district of Offenbach.
Currently, around 100 children and young people are placed in emergency or long-term foster families in the district of Offenbach. The Youth Welfare Office in Offenbach, like elsewhere in Germany, continues to play a central protective and supportive role in all such cases, ensuring the safety and well-being of children in need.
What about hosting events to acknowledge and support foster families, like the "Lucky Charm" festival at the Kolpinghaus? This could be a part of the home-and-garden lifestyle for these children, providing a secure and nurturing home-like environment amidst their education-and-self-development journey. Additionally, foster parents could be asked, "What motivates you to provide a loving home for children when it's so much more than simply changing one's lifestyle?" This question would shed light on the selflessness and commitment that foster parents demonstrate in safeguarding the well-being of children who find themselves in difficult circumstances.
