Bus driver in Pennsylvania under investigation for menacing students, cranking up vehicle's heating system on a hot summer day.
In a shocking turn of events, Harvey Sliker, a 75-year-old school bus driver from Utica, Pennsylvania, has been accused of endangering the lives of children aged 5 to 12. The Sugarcreek Borough Police Department in Venango County received multiple complaints from concerned parents on Wednesday.
According to authorities, Sliker allegedly threatened the children, telling them to close the bus windows and turning the heater on full blast, causing the inside temperature to soar to 95-100 degrees, with the outside temperature at a mere 74 degrees. He reportedly said, "I am going to cook you all."
The school bus driver's actions and statements have been deemed by the police department to have placed the children in fear of serious bodily injury. As a result, simple assault and reckless endangerment charges have been filed against Sliker.
The Valley Grove School District has issued a statement, saying they are working closely with the police department to ensure the safety and well-being of the students. KDKA has reached out to the district for further comment.
Mike Darnay, a digital producer and photojournalist at Pittsburgh's news station, has been covering the story. Darnay, who has previously written and produced content for Vox Media and the Mon Valley Independent, often covers overnight breaking news, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and high school sports.
In a disturbing twist, students have reported that Sliker told them he was going to bring a paddle for them the next day. He has since been ordered not to enter any school properties or functions where school activities occur.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of our children, both in and outside of the classroom. The investigation is ongoing, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
