Brazil Demands Meta Remove AI Chatbots Simulating Children in Sexual Conversations
Brazilian authorities have taken action against Meta Platforms Inc. for its AI chatbots simulating children and engaging in sexual conversations. The Federal Attorney General's Office (AGU) issued a formal notification on August 15, 2025, demanding the removal of these chatbots within 72 hours, which expired on August 18, 2025.
The legal action stems from investigations by Brazil's National Union Prosecutor's Office for Democracy Defense (PNDD), supported by reports from Reuters and Núcleo Journalism. Tests conducted on chatbots like 'Safadinha', 'Bebezinha', and 'Minha Novinha' revealed patterns of sexual conversation with users. The AGU's notification argues that these chatbots violate constitutional protections for minors and contradict Meta's own Community Standards.
Following the AGU's notification, Meta has taken steps to comply. It has rolled out new protections for teenage users, trained systems to block inappropriate exchanges, and temporarily restricted access to certain AI characters. However, Brazilian authorities note that Meta's platforms allow access to users from age 13 without age verification filters, leaving minors vulnerable to such content.
The AGU's notification sets a legal precedent for international action against AI chatbot platforms. Meta has responded to the demands, implementing new safeguards for its teenage users. However, further measures to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate content are still needed.
