Astana's school count to hit 24, announces Genis Kasymbek
Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan, is making significant strides in its commitment to education with the ongoing "Comfortable School" project. As part of a broader national initiative, the city is focusing on the construction of social facilities, particularly educational institutions.
In line with this national project, 7 schools will be built as part of the "Comfortable School" initiative in Astana. These new schools are being constructed across all districts of the city, with a total capacity to accommodate 28,000 students. This move is expected to address overcrowding issues in 4 schools with three-shift education and 7 overcrowded schools.
The announcement of these plans was made by the Akim of Astana, Jenis Kasymbek, who shared the news on his Instagram account. Kasymbek, along with First Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Roman Sklyar, and Minister of Education and Science, Ganymbek Beisembayev, inspected the construction progress of these comfortable schools.
This academic year, another 15 schools will be opened in Astana, bringing the total number of schools commissioned in the city over the past year to 39. However, the exact locations of the newly built schools have not been specified.
The "Comfortable School" project in Astana is part of a larger national effort to equalize educational opportunities across urban and rural areas. Over the past four years, Kazakhstan has updated resources in more than 4,000 rural schools, and this effort is ongoing.
The project aims to eliminate the education gap by refurbishing and building schools, upgrading material and technical resources, and enhancing facilities such as libraries, canteens, and gyms. In 2025, around 245 schools covering 190,000 students across Kazakhstan are undergoing large-scale renovations, including Astana.
The recent national conference of Kazakhstani teachers, held in Astana, highlighted the president’s commitment to ensuring all children have equal educational opportunities regardless of location. This initiative includes applying a unified school design code and expanding supplementary education programs, some of which have been piloted in Astana as part of a voucher financing model.
While no exact numbers of new or renovated schools exclusively in Astana under this project are given, Astana is confirmed as a key location for pilot programs and ongoing renovation and construction efforts within the national framework.
By 2026, the "Comfortable School" project aims to provide equal education conditions across the country. The project in Astana is progressing through school renovations, provision of modern classrooms, and piloting new educational programs and financing schemes.
