AI-infused TV characters contribute to student learning, as found in a study led by Harvard researchers

In a groundbreaking study led by Ying Xu, a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the effectiveness of AI-powered characters in educational TV shows was explored. The research, conducted in partnership with PBS Kids, aimed to assess if AI chatbot technology could assist in learning when a caregiver isn't watching a show with the children.

The study involved more than 200 children aged 4-7, who were divided into three groups. One group only watched the show, another group interacted with an AI-assisted version of the character Elinor, and the final group had Elinor asking questions and giving generic replies.

The findings suggest a clear advantage for children who engaged in interactive learning with the AI-powered character. Those who watched the interactive version of the show performed best, followed by those who watched the pseudo-interactive version, and lastly, those who watched the broadcast version.

The study used a unique low-code AI platform called Capybara, which enabled children to create and animate 3D virtual characters. The platform used AI vision models to detect physical objects and enable interactions between the virtual and physical worlds. Participants programmed interactive behaviors such as collision detection and physical-environment awareness.

The research highlights opportunities for more expressive interactions and suggests integrating advances like 3D environment scanning to deepen virtual-physical educational experiences. The main focus was on supporting creativity and interactive learning by blending AI-driven virtual characters with the physical environment.

The benefits of AI-assisted learning could potentially extend to other STEM domains, such as computational thinking. Researchers anticipate larger effects when children watch multiple videos over a longer period of time. The study also aims to learn more about the real-world applications of AI-assisted lessons, particularly examining how interacting with AI might help children not only comprehend educational content but also enhance their ability to apply what they learn to solve real-world problems.

Future research will study how the impact of interactive AI characters influences young students over time and how children might interact with and learn from these interactive videos in their homes. The study offers a promising step towards a scalable mechanism to support children's learning from television, potentially revolutionising the way educational content is delivered and consumed.
